As you know, SUMS is a non-audition choir, but still aims to put on concerts of a high calibre so that you get to enjoy performing great music as well as the audience. As such we have Rehearsal Requirements, a set number of rehearsals you should attend in preparation for each concert to ensure that all members of the choir know and feel confident about their music. Please see linked below for a copy of the requirements for our upcoming performance of Elijah.
If for some reason you are unable to make concert requirements, you may still be able to perform. If you have any concerns about making rehearsal requirements or singing in the concert, please discuss your options with either your section leader or myself, the concert manager.
Additionally, rehearsal requirements represent the minimum attendance. If you can make it to a rehearsal you should attend as we cover a lot of ground each week and simply not coming as you have made requirements is letting down the rest of the choir. We do however understand if personal circumstances mean that you cannot attend.
Due to bureaucratic red tape the minutes of the SUMS General Meeting on 24 September 2014 were deemed invalid. As such, we will be holding a general meeting on Wednesday 25th March 2015 in Studio B to validate the proceedings and hold elections to appoint the 2015 committee.
The position’s available are:
- Concert Manger
- Event’s Officer
- Publicity Officer
- Fundraising Officer
The Ex-officio Position’s Available are:
- General Assistant
- O Vos Omnes Editor
With a fantastic O Week wrapped up we hope you’re as excited as we are for our Welcome BBQ and first rehearsal of the year.
We’ll be setting up at the Botany Lawn near the Quad, come along from 5:00 PM, just follow the chalk and you’ll find us! For more details, check out the Facebook event here.
Once we’re all fed, we’ll be singing from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM in Studio B within the Holme Building. Don’t worry about getting lost; we’ll have plenty of committee members around to help you get there.
After rehearsal, we’ll be heading to our faithful pub, the Forest Lodge Hotel (more commonly known as the Flodge) just across the Footbridge from the Holme Building. If you’re on the fence, it’s not uncommon for some of the older members to get enthusiastic about buying drinks for new members…
If you missed signing up at O Week, we’d love for you to come along anyway – our Secretary would be happy to get you sorted out once you arrive.
We look forward to seeing you there!
And we’re go! Pick up your Access Card then come along to join up for 2015 – we’ll be here until 5:00 PM on the Front Lawns! If you can’t make it today, just come along on Thursday or Friday to make sure you don’t miss out on the fun.
Our small group will be performing today at 2:30 PM at The Wormhole – be sure to catch them as they perform old songbook pieces along with some great new repertoire!
Come along to the University of Sydney Union O Week to see and join SUMS! In 2015, USYD main campus will be transformed into a portal through space and time with a line up that is “bigger on the inside”. This year’s program is jam packed with music, comedy, parties, clubs, activities, freebies, food, drinks over three epic days.
While you’re there, don’t forget to stop by the SUMS stall to meet the committee and sign up for 2015! In addition, our fabulous small group will be singing at The Wormhole on Wednesday 25th February from 2:30 PM. Featuring songbook favourites as well as some newer additions, it’ll be sure to get you back in the mood for some fabulous choral singing.
Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting of the Sydney University Musical Society (SUMS) will be held at 8pm on Wednesday 30th April 2014 in The Reading Room, in the Holme Building.
The purpose of the meeting is to:
a) Receive the 2013/14 President’s Report
b) Receive the 2013/14 Secretary’s Report
c) Receive the 2013/14 Treasurer’s Report
Please note that only Ordinary Members of the Society are eligible to vote at meeting; Ordinary Members are those members of the Society who are members of the University of Sydney Union (please note this is not the same thing as holding an Access Card).
If you have any questions regarding the meeting, or wish to send your apologies for absenteeism please contact the Secretary.
I’d like to congratulate everyone involved in our Vivaldi and Mozart concert this past weekend! From choristers to committee, musicians to Musical Director, the University of Sydney Union to the welcoming Elders of Hunter Baillie Presbyterian Church, everyone put in loads of effort and our concert was a great success. Once again, I am incredibly proud of SUMS.
Special thanks go to our fabulous chamber orchestra, as led by the amazing Fiona Ziegler. With such beautiful strings and woodwind and brass and organ, and such skilled musicians behind them supporting and balancing the choir, it’s no wonder that our combined sound was so impressive!
Further thanks go to our incredible soloists: Joanna Cole, Sally-Anne Russell, Richard Butler, and Daniel Nicholson. It was an honour to work with all of you, and you each brought a very special element to our concert. Hopefully SUMS will have the honour of working with each of you again in the future.
And of course, final thanks go to every one who attended our concert. We couldn’t keep performing without the continued support and patronage of a happy audience. We hope that you enjoyed the concert as much as we did, and are very grateful for the kind words of appreciation some of you have already shared with us.
I’m also very proud to announce that SUMS is now starting rehearsals for our next concert, Carolfest 2013, our 55th Annual Festival of Lessons and Carols. This year will feature some stunningly beautiful carols, as well as the return of Sydney University Organist Amy Johansen, also known for her position as Honorary Carillonist at the University. If you’ve ever been a member of SUMS, you will know just how momentous an event this is, and how excited we are to have Amy Johansen on board for this concert. If you’re as excited as we are about this, now might be an ideal time to consider joining us for another concert. We’d love to see you at rehearsals (details can be found here!) or in the audience at the Great Hall come concert day (December 7th; more concert details coming soon!).
Once again, thank you all for your interest and involvement in SUMS. You all give me such pride.
